Ironically, it’s not the areas in which our ignorance and incompetence are the largest that we’re most uncomfortable. I know nothing of Eastern European literature, and I’m fine with that. I have no skills in kiteboarding, and that doesn’t bother me. It is ignorance and incompetence in the next things—the adjacent areas where we’ll find the knowledge and skills to help us take the next step—that make us most uncomfortable.
